Following is a partial list of journals related to the study of Cognition, Culture, Development, and education in Math and Science

Educational Researcher - ER is published nine times per year and is received by all members of AERA. It contains scholarly articles of general significance to the educational R&D community from a wide range of disciplines. ER features articles that report, synthesize, review, or analyze scholarly inquiry, with emphasis placed on articles that focus on the interpretation, implication, or significance of research and development work in education. Similarly, articles that emphasize extant or emerging developments of import to the R&D field remain a paramount objective. Issues are available online and downloadable in PDF format.

American Educational Research Journal: A quarterly published by the American Educational Research Association, this journal is devoted primarily to carrying "original reports of empirical and theoretical studies and analyses in education." Its articles, averaging around thirty pages in length, are heavy reading but deal with important issues. Recent topics have included the assessment of classroom learning, student's problem solving behaviors, and the effects of varying conceptions of knowledge. The articles are grouped into two sections. The first, "Social and Institutional Analysis," tends to be more analytical, while the second, "Teaching, Learning and Human Development," tends to be more practically oriented with case studies and articles dealing with the implications of research. Journal description, tables of contents, abstracts, and manuscript guidelines are available online.

Cognition and Instruction: Cognition and Instruction is an "interdisciplinary journal devoted to cognitive investigations of instruction and learning." The typical issue will have four or five articles concerned with such things as the cognitive analysis of tasks and performances that are instructionally relevant, general theories of skill and knowledge acquisition, and cognitive-theoretical analyses of instructional interventions. Occasionally an issue will be dedicated to a single theme. Editorial policy and subscription information available online. Through UC Berkeley, we have access to the electronic versions of the issues beginning in March 2000. The articles are downloadable in PDF format.

Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching (JCMST): JCMST is a highly respected scholarly journal which offers an in-depth forum for the interchange of information in the fields of science, mathematics, and computer science. JCMST is the only periodical devoted specifically to using information technology in the teaching of mathematics and science. The table of contents and abstracts are available online.

Journal of Interactive Learning Research: The Journal of Interactive Learning Research (JILR) publishes papers related to the underlying theory, design, implementation, effectiveness, and impact on education and training of interactive learning environments. The table of contents and abstracts are available online.

Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME): The official journal of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, this journal has an international focus and is "devoted to the interests of teachers of mathematics and mathematics education at all levels--preschool through adult." Research reports, case studies, theoretical articles, and commentaries are commonly published. Book reviews. An index for each volume appears in the November issue. Also indexed in CIJE (ERIC) and Education Index.

Journal of Chemical Education: Written with teachers of secondary and college level chemistry in mind, this journal is dedicated to providing practical and theoretical information. Readers will find articles dealing with teaching methodologies, innovations in the fields of chemistry and chemical education, and classroom "helpers" such as sample laboratory experiments and "tested demonstrations." In fact, "Laboratory Experiments" is a regular department that provides procedures for as many as a dozen experiments. Book and materials reviews. Table of contents, abstracts and full articles are available online.

Journal for Research in Science Teaching: Published by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching and the Center for Science Education, the Journal of Research in Science Teaching includes all types of scholarly writings about research on science teaching and learning; inclusion of methodology is expected. The journal is international in its breadth and covers a wide range of topics, from the reading skills needed to understand a physics textbook, to prospective teachers' "preservice conceptions of teaching and learning." This journal truly focuses on the learning and teaching process surrounding the sciences, not the sciences themselves. Table of contents, abstracts and full articles (PDF) available online.

International Journal of Science Education: This journal publishes applicable research involving all levels of science education and is dedicated to reporting international innovations in practice and theory. In addition, a good deal of attention is given to promoting an understanding of the interconnections between science education and other disciplines. Reviews of existing research, accounts of new research, reports of proposed research, and book reviews of interest to science educators are the four main types of articles published. Table of contents, abstracts and full articles (PDF) available online.

Review of Educational Research: RER publishes critical, integrative reviews of research literature bearing on education. Such reviews should include conceptualizations, interpretations, and syntheses of literature and scholarly work in a field. RER encourages the submission of research relevant to education from any discipline, such as reviews of research in psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, political science, economics, computer science, statistics, anthropology, and biology, provided that the review bears on educational issues. Abstracts are available online.

Journal of the Learning Sciences: This cognitive science journal provides a multidisciplinary forum for the presentation of research on teaching and learning. Relevant articles come from disciplines such as artificial intelligence, cognitive science, cognitive and educational psychology, cognitive anthropology, education, and educational technology. Because the "learning sciences" covers the entire science/technology spectrum, the journal's main goal is to foster new ways of thinking about learning and teaching that allow cognitive science disciplines to have an impact on the practice of education. Thus, the journal publishes articles that can offer real-world contributions. Through UC Berkeley, we have access to the electronic versions of the issues beginning in January 2000. The articles are downloadable in PDF format.

Mathematical Thinking and Learning: The international mathematics education community is maturing at a rapid and exciting rate. Although this community has developed its own research perspectives and theoretical frameworks, it continues to expand its horizons by drawing upon new theories and research in mathematics, psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, mathematics, and information technology. MTL is directed at researchers interested in mathematics education from any of these perspectives, with a particular focus on mathematical thinking, reasoning, and learning. Through UC Berkeley, we have access to the electronic versions of the issues beginning in April 2000. The articles are downloadable in PDF format.

Mind, Culture, and Activity: Mind, Culture, and Activity (MCA) is an interdisciplinary, international journal devoted to the study of the human mind in its cultural and historical contexts. Articles appearing in MCA draw upon research and theory in a variety of disciplines including anthropology, cognitive science, education, linguistics, psychology and sociology. Particular emphasis is placed upon research that seeks to resolve methodological problems associated with the analysis of human action in everyday activities and theoretical approaches that place culture and activity at the center of attempts to understand human nature. Through UC Berkeley, we have access to the electronic version of the issues beginning in May 2000. The articles are downloadable in PDF format.

Cognitive Science: Cognitive Science is the official journal of the Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Membership in the society includes a subscription to the journal. Members can also access the journal electronically at Cognitive Science Journal On-line This resource includes html titles and abstracts, pdfs of full text articles, browse and search facilities across issues, an author index, and all issues from the first issue of 1996 through the most recent issue published. Username and password for this site are provided to members upon registration each year. For more information, contact cogsci@umich.edu.

Journal of Mathematical Behavior: The Journal of Mathematical Behavior exists for two reasons: to assist in efforts to improve the learning and teaching of mathematics, and to help develop a deeper understanding of how people learn and use mathematics. JMB is published by Elsevier and more information about the journal as well as tables of contents are available online.

Journal of Science Education and Technology: JSET is an interdisciplinary forum for the publication of original peerreviewed, contributed and invited articles to improve and enhance science education at all levels worldwide. Topics covered can be categorized as: disciplinary, technological, and organizational. Insofar as technology is playing an increasing role both in the understanding and development of science disciplines and in the delivery of information, the journal includes it as a component of science education. In addition to works in the fields mentioned above and case studies of exemplary implementations, the journal publishes reviews of books, videotapes, software, and relevant products to help reach our common goal: excellence in science education. Tables of contents are available online. Published by Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Educational Studies in Mathematics: ESM presents new ideas and developments of major importance to those working in the field of mathematical education. It reflects both the variety of research concerns within this discipline as well as the range of methods used to study them.
