Furthering the Basic Skills Initiative:
Enhancing Engagement, Improving Instruction, and Understanding What Students Need
The Tillery Institute, sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Education, and in conjunction with the Basic Skills Leadership Institute and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is presenting a three-day workshop for community college teams a focus on three aspects of student success: enhancing student motivation and engagement; improving the quality of instruction; and understanding what students need to become more successful in college.
The Institute will kick off Sunday evening, August 1 with a keynote by Elizabeth Barkley, followed by her Monday full morning workshop on student motivation and engagement.
Terms of Engagement:
Understanding and Promoting Student Engagement in Today’s College Classroom
Elizabeth F. Barkley
Concern over student engagement has become central to conversations regarding quality in higher education, but what does ‘student engagement’ mean? And once we know, how do we achieve it? Integrating theory, research, and practice, this keynote with follow-up ‘hands on’ workshop synthesizes the relevant theory, research and good practice literature to offer teachers a dynamic model for understanding student engagement as well as tips, strategies and techniques for promoting it in today’s face-to-face and online classroom.

This Institute honors the
legacy of Dale Tillery, an author of the California Master Plan
for Higher Education and a leader in protecting open access
and multiple options for all community college learners. Tillery
served on the GSE faculty from 1958 until 1981. |
This 3-day conference provides a unique setting for a team from your
campus to reflect, plan for needed change, receive input from peers,
and prepare to implement innovation.
