CalDay Panel Explores No Child Left Behind
On CalDay, the campus’s annual open house, the Graduate School
of Education presented a panel discussion on
“No Child Left Behind: Lofty Goals, Positive Effects,
Unkept Promises.” The panel, which featured Dean P. David
Pearson and Professors Judith Warren Little and Alan Schoenfeld, dealt
with the way in which current federal policy is affecting students and
educators, both in California and nationally. Panelists pointed out
that many of the provisions of the No Child Left Behind legislation
are creating a culture of “drill and kill” teaching that
is more focused on producing test results for specific students than
on providing the best education for all young people. The panel noted
that the legislation’s goals are by most estimates unattainable
in the time frame of the bill. Panelists also explored different alternatives
to the current legislation to make it more effective and realistic.
