UC Berkeley and Aspire
Public Schools, a not-for profit public charter network operator,
won approval from the Oakland Unified School District in February to
open a jointly designed secondary school to help more students prepare
for and succeed in college. The former Golden Gate Elementary
School on San Pablo Avenue in Oakland will be the site for the new school,
a partnership between the University and Aspire. On track to open this
fall, the school will initially serve approximately 120 to 160 students
in the 6th and 7th grades and will add a grade annually through the
12th grade.
Michael Prada has recently accepted the position of principal. An experienced
and bilingual administrator, Prada will be coming to the Early College
Secondary School from the School of the Epiphany in San Francisco.
The aim of the secondary school is to improve students’ skills
and abilities to prepare for the rigors of college, have students take
college courses while in high school, develop a smooth transition for
students going from high school to college, and improve educational
equity.
For more information on enrollment, call (510) 251-1660

Aspire will also begin a charter public school for grades K–5
at the same location. For the latest news about the new school visit
