Debuts This August

Graduate School of Education, 1970-80 |
The GSE will launch the Dale Tillery Summer
Institute for Community College Leadership and Innovation this
August 1-4 at the Clark Kerr Campus at UC Berkeley. Endowed
by gifts from generous friends and students in memory of the late GSE
Dean and co-author of the California Master Plan for Higher Education,
this annual program aims to promote long-term institutional and field
development in the California Community Colleges and to help faculty
and management provide a high-quality education to all students over
the next decade and beyond.
The inaugural Tillery Institute will address the enrollment increases,
tight budgets, and wide range of student preparation levels that California
schools currently face. The Institute will increase knowledge of institutional
and pedagogical challenges. It will also provide opportunities for instructors
and executives to learn about unique conditions in California, hear
of successful reforms in other states, plan innovations to be implemented
in the upcoming academic year at individual sites, and receive feedback
and support between summers. In turn, the GSE will learn from the community
colleges what additional UC-Berkeley sponsored activities would be most
helpful going forward.
GSE Professor Norton Grubb, former California Community Colleges Chancellor
Jerry Hayward, Syracuse University Professor Vincent Tinto, and other
nationally recognized experts will lead the Institute.
