Gail Uilkema (née Greenwald, Multiple Subject Credential ’66) has retired after twenty-one years as a school superintendent. She also served as a UC Regent in her capacity as an alumna of UC Santa Barbara. Since retiring she has founded Lantern Projects, a non-profit organization, to raise funds for small projects around the world. The foundation is unusual in that 100% of the funds raised go directly to the projects. Their website is www.lanternprojects.org. She can be reached at lanternprojects@comcast.net.

Carol L. Palmer (née McDonald, B.A. ’66, Single Subject Credentials ’68) lives in San Pablo and teaches in the West Contra Costa Unified School District. She graduated from Cal with credentials in French and English. “I have since added credentials,” she writes, “in social studies, history, dance, sports and games, physical education, special education (learning handicapped), elementary, and (the most challenging) auto mechanics.” She adds, “I enjoy spending time with my sons, grandsons, and cats.”

Stephen Juan (B.A. ’70, M.A. ’75, Ph.D. ’81) has been teaching in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney in Australia since 1978. His books have been translated into seventeen languages. His syndicated newspaper column has appeared in the Daily News in New York City, the Toronto National Post, and other papers. “I think about Berkeley with great fondness,” he writes. “The GSE was vital in my career development. As we say in Australia, Good on ya, mate!”

Stanley Murphy (B.A. ’71, Single Subject Credential ’72) was chosen one of five California Teachers of the Year. Murphy also represented California in the National Teacher of the Year competition. A high school teacher of social studies in San Diego for 28 years, Murphy has organized cultural exchange programs that have sent his students to Russia, Argentina, and Austria. Murphy was the first in his family to attend college. He takes his students on bus tours of college campuses, along with history lessons during side trips to California missions and to the capitol in Sacramento.

Barbara Nemko (Ph.D. ’81) was named Superintendent of the Year for Region 4 of the Association of California School Administrators. Nemko has served as the superintendent of the Napa County Office of Education since 1997. The award puts her in the running to be named state superintendent of the year. “It’s a great honor,” said Nemko in an interview with the Napa Valley Register, “but you can only be honored if you work with unbelievably dedicated people. The people at the Napa County Office of Education are a wonderful team that work hard to be responsive to the needs of kids, parents, and teachers. Nobody does it alone.”

Amanda Godley (M.A. ’96, Ph.D. ’01) is now an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh. She was recently awarded a Spencer Post-Doctoral Fellowship.Alice Bresnan (M.A. and Multiple Subject Credential ’03) teaches in the Ravenswood City School District in East Palo Alto. She writes that she has been campaigning to keep a balanced approach to literacy education there: “I gave an opening statement at a meeting of the school board, and it felt very good. I was followed by seven other teachers. I may not have been the most talkative person or even the most sure of myself, but I can tell you the DTE program instilled in me the best practices and personally challenged me to always stand up for my children, and I always will.”
