The April 12 Celebration of Children’s
Literature slimmed down and bulked up in its 14th iteration.
While the annual event has been a solid attraction that draws families in the local community to the School of Education on Cal Day, Steven Cohen, who organized the event, said "you could say we did more with less this year."
Cohen indicated that were half as many authors and illustrators, musicians, costumed character characters this year compared with 2007, and the lightly attended educational workshops were eliminated.
The result? The free community event drew record crowds in and around Tolman Hall, unprecedented book and CD sales and more than twice the number of spectators for storytelling. They also enjoyed a book fair with author signings, bookmaking with Bay Area Writing Project teacher consultant Linda Block and the magnetic appearance of
Curious George.
They enjoyed fun, educational events that included a book fair with author signings, costumed character Clifford and Wild Thing, storytelling, music, bookmaking and panels.
"As far as I know, this is the first profitable event we have ever had," said Celebration organizer Steve Cohen, "and I'm quite certain it was the lowest budget on record."
Cohen says that the better attendance and sales
were at least partially attributable to the presence of established
Bay Area children's authors Gennifer Choldenko, Marissa Moss, Elisa Kleven and Thacher Hurd, storyteller Joel ben Izzy and musical performer Gary Lapow. , talented local storytellers Muriel Johnson and Clara Yen, tasty $1 barbecued sausages,
"It was great to see so many kids and their families in and about Tolman Hall," said GSE Dean P. David Pearson. "Come
next year!"
