The Celebration of Children’s Literature drew 2,000 people to the Education-Psychology Library on Cal Day, April 18.
With half as many authors and illustrators compared with 2007, and the barbecue and lightly attended educational panels and workshops eliminated, the 15th iteration of the free community event still drew record crowds and an 11 percent rise in book and CD sales over 2008. Families were drawn to the Education-Psychology Library for a book fair with author signings, the Children's Room of the library for for storytelling by Kirk Waller and Walker Brents III and a neighboring room for bookmaking with Bay Area Writing Project teacher consultants. Gary Lapow offered musical entertainment while storybook legends Peter Rabbit and Corduroy Bear enchanted young children in and around Tolman Hall.
"This was a very special year for the event," said event director Steven Cohen. "A warmer venue, the timely 'Dear President Obama' letter-writing session, nice weather, an extraordinary cast of talented authors and illustrators... it all fell into place beautifully.
"Special thanks need to go to Steiner Books, the Cal Student Store, the Bay Area Writing Project, work-study students, the Education-Psychology Library staff and others for making such a successful event possible."
