Alumni and friends of the Graduate School of Education gathered to congratulate outstanding GSE students at the Sixth Annual Scholarship Tea, held May 12 in the Education-Psychology Library.

With graduate tuition rising and state funding diminishing sharply, students are relying on private support to bridge the funding gap. The GSE has been fortunate over the past two decades to receive generous gifts in support of the Flanders California Fellowship program, founded in honor of nationally recognized educator Ned Flanders. More than 300 GSE students have been able to pursue careers in public education, most often in underserved urban schools, thanks to Flanders Fellowships. This year, 12 Flanders Fellows, who have committed to teaching in California for at least four years upon graduation, were recognized at the Tea.

In addition, private support enables GSE to build an endowment to ensure that scholarships will be available to help sustain its aspiring educators far into the future. The School and its students are grateful to the Mara W. Breech Foundation, Miranda Heller and the Heller Charitable Foundation, and the family of Helen Murphy Neumann for their significant contributions to endow scholarships.

GSE thanks the many donors whose scholarship gifts make a life-changing difference in the lives of the recipients and in the lives of the thousands of children and families they will serve.

Scholarship gifts to support aspiring teachers, principals or researchers may be made online
or by calling the GSE Development Office at (510) 643-9784.
