Tony Smith New Oakland Superintendent |
GSE alumnus Tony Smith is the new superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), the first permanent, locally chosen leader since the 2003 state takeover of the district.
Smith, who received his Master’s in 1993 and Ph.D. in 2002, was appointed Deputy Superintendent for Instruction, Innovation and Social Justice for San Francisco Unified School District in 2007. Smith received the 2008 California Alumni Association’s Mark Bingham Award for Excellence in Achievement by a Young Alumnus.
Smith, 42, will also be an Oakland public school parent when his oldest daughter, who is 6, will attend Crocker Highlands Elementary School in the fall.
