Nina Hersch Gabelko, who directed the Academic Talent Development Program (ATDP) for 24 years, retired October 1. GSE alumna Adena Young, who was named interim director, and Gabelko revisit Nina’s 44 years of service to education in “Leaving ATDP Smiling,” an article that appeared in ATDP’s summer newletter.

 

Book Cover Professor Emeritus Guy Benveniste's memoir From Paris to Berkeley was published last year. It covers his narrow escape from France in 1942, his life in Mexico, studies at Harvard, settling in California, service in the Kennedy Administration, the World Bank and UNESCO, and finally his appointment to the School of Education in 1968. Benveniste has also published several books on organizations and planning.

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

John P. Matlin, a senior lecturer at the Graduate School of Education from 1965-1981, and assistant dean and head of teacher education from 1979-81, passed away in May at the age of 93. Matlin served as a principal in Berkeley USD and the UC Lab Schools from 1964-69 and received his E.d.D. from the School of Education in 1965. He developed the document, "Professional Preparation Program Plans for Multiple and Single Subject Credentials," which was submitted to the California Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing," in 1974, and later was a staff member on the plan. He authored several pieces on education administration practices and issues.
