Summer 2006 marks 25 years since Anne Wallach first welcomed students into The UC Berkeley Gifted Program. Now known as The Academic Talent Development Program (ATDP), and directed by Nina Hersch Gabelko since 1987, the program offers more than 100 classes each summer to students in grades K-11.

ATDP is also developing year-round activities. Three years ago a gift from the Ng family, whose children attended ATDP, helped launch the Magic Carpet Reading and Math Clubs. With the support of their teachers and school officers, dedicated students have joined the clubs from several Richmond elementary schools. Through a new Cowell Foundation grant, ATDP will bring the clubs to San Pablo's Helms Middle School in January. The program expects to partner with Helms' feeder elementary schools and move along with students to Richmond High School, which most Helms graduates attend. Helms' teachers will also visit the club members when they go to ATDP in summer.

The summer program continues to bring together students from a broad range of backgrounds, united by a common love of learning. ATDP-supported research has also contributed to the knowledge base on academically talented students, with publications in book chapters and several journals, including Gifted Child Quarterly and The Journal of Secondary Gifted Education.

For more information, visit ATDP's website or e-mail.
