Dean David Pearson,
GSE faculty and guests welcomed CREDE’s founding director,
Roland Tharp, and other colleagues from the Center for Research
on Education, Diversity and Excellence at a reception and
talk on November 10.
CREDE recently
received a $3 million U.S. Department of Education grant
to develop a national program of basic research on improving
the education of students whose ability to reach their potential
is challenged by language or cultural barriers, race, geographic
location or poverty.
At the UC Berkeley welcoming, Tharp discussed CREDE’s
history and work that has resulted in the development of
its five standards for education:
• Teachers and students working
together
• Developing language skills across all curriculum
• Connecting lessons to students’ lives
• Engaging students with challenging lessons
• Emphasizing dialogue over lectures.
Previously headquartered
at UC Santa Cruz, from their new GSE offices at UC Berkeley CREDE
will conduct research and development on the implementation of these
standards in pre-service and in-service teacher education.
