GSE’s First Thursday Movie Series, launched
in fall 2005, continues in the new year with four more classics:
February 2: The Miracle Worker
(1962)
Academy Award winners Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft
star in the biographical story of the blind and deaf Helen Keller
and Anne Sullivan’s struggle to teach her how to communicate.
March 3: The Quiet One (1948)
A classic documentary of school’s power
to challenge the brutalizing force of American racism, written by
Pulitzer Prize-winning author James Agee.
April 6: The Education of Sonny Carson
(1974)
A drama about the life of Sonny Carson, who was
educated in New York’s schools, streets and jails, and developed
from a honors student to a gang leader and then a Black revolutionary.
May 4: The Wild Child (1970)
Renowned French director Francois Truffaut’s
true-life tale of a young boy found living alone in the woods of
France in the 1700s, and how Dr. Jean Itard manages to educate him,
with a lot of love and patience.
Fall 2005 movies were The Blackboard Jungle,
Up the Down Staircase and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
