University of Texas professor Sharon Vaughn lectures on preventing reading difficulties among Spanish speaking children at last summer's institute.

UC Berkeley will host the second annual Summer Institute in Reading for leading professionals in the field at the Clark Kerr campus, July 23-28, 2006.

Led by GSE Adjunct Professor Elfrieda Hiebert and Dean David Pearson, “Developing Tomorrow's Thinkers: Comprehension and Beyond" will address reading strategies identified by the National Reading Panel (NRP) as well as the gaps identified by NRP and the Rand Reading Study Group, such as instruction of English learners, comprehension in the content areas and the needs of adolescents. The Institute offers an ideal place for educators who are working to achieve the goals of the national Reading First Initiative.

Some of the nation's foremost reading scholars from UC Berkeley, Stanford, Michigan and other prestigious universities, will speak. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with prominent researchers and teacher-educators in small groups. The institute, which is being sponsored by the Graduate School of Education and Scholastic, will culminate with a boat cruise on San Francisco Bay.

The five-day institute will offer both a residential and commuter package, with fees covering meals and/or accommodations. For more information or to register, click here or e-mail.
