U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Concord) visited UC Berkeley in October for a hands-on computer demonstration by Martinez Junior High School students who are using an inquiry-based curriculum to learn about complex science topics through the NSF-funded TELS (the Center for Technology Enhanced Learning in Science) project directed by GSE professor Marcia Linn.
During the demonstration on seismology, the top-ranking Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee, peppered the students, Linn and teachers with questions about what they were doing and its implications for education policy.
“We learn more and we are more interested in science,” responded one student. “To fully learn something you have to be able to explain it to someone else.”
Miller, who graduated from Martinez Junior High School, apparently came away impressed. “I’m a big proponent of technology in science education,” he said. “Hopefully we can make it more accessible to more students. They perform better when they have access.”
