Sixteen leadership teams from community colleges
throughout the state convened for presentations and discussions
focused on college equity, access and completion at the inaugural
Dale Tillery Institute for Community College Leadership and Innovation,
August 1–4 at UC Berkeley’s Clark Kerr Center. Each
team then created an action plan to be implemented at their college
during this academic year. A $5,000 award will be being given to
the college with the most successful equity plan.
Named in memory of former GSE Dean Dale Tillery,
a revered professor and an author of the community college section
of the California Master Plan for Higher Education, the Institute
aims to continue Tillery’s legacy by developing leadership
for the community colleges. Professor Norton Grubb serves as faculty
coordinator of the Institute. Guest speakers included California
Community Colleges Chancellor Mark Drummond, Syracuse University
Professor Vincent Tinto, California Tomorrow Executive Director
Laurie Olsen and other nationally recognized scholars and college
leaders.
Plans for next summer's Institute are underway.
