Cal Day 2006 at the Graduate School of Education
After a two-year hiatus, the 12th Celebration of Children’s
Literature made a spectacular return to Tolman Hall on Cal Day, April
22.
More than 1,000 visitors flocked to the event, which featured several
new authors and illustrators, brisk sales of tasty $1 barbecued sausages,
bookmaking with the Museum of Children’s Art, workshops and panels,
the debuts of popular Bay Area children’s musical performer Gary
Lapow and talented local storyteller Muriel Johnson, record book fair
sales through the Cal Student Store and the mesmerizing appearance of
Clifford and Dumb Bunny.
“We had an incredibly successful set of events [the Celebration
and a GSE
Panel on June’s preschool ballot initiative],” said
Dean David Pearson, “and next year promises to be even better.”
“I was surprised that it came together so well,” confessed
rookie event organizer Steve Cohen. “The rain held off, volunteers
pitched in and families came here [to Tolman Hall] in droves.”
Cohen says that a later (11 a.m.) start and a better book fair set up
were two of many factors that led to the day’s success.
“We have laid the groundwork for a better event for years to come,”
said Cohen, “and there’s already a buzz about next year.
Most of the participants want to return and many others are calling
me already to keep them in mind.”
