A total of 125 happy students received their degrees
at the Graduate School of Education’s commencement May 13 in Zellerbach
Hall.
Dean David Pearson declared it a
“day of celebration” and urged the graduates to look at
the event as a beginning, not an ending. Speaking for Assemblymember
Carol Liu, who declined to cross a picket line to give
the keynote, Pearson said that she shared their passion for education,
opportunity and peace, and would urge them to “know all you can
know and do all you can do.”
He also peppered his remarks with plenty of good humor
that lightened the day. After polling the graduates and finding only
a handful planning on teaching at the university level, he joked, “That’s
good, because, as you know, elementary teachers love children, secondary
school teachers love their subject and college professors love themselves.”
William Tibbey, President of the Education Alumni Association,
presented the Outstanding Dissertation Award to Yiyu Xie,
who received her Ph.D. last May. Her dissertation chair, Mark
Wilson, accepted the award on her behalf, and discussed the
significance of the paper as it relates to international testing.

Verda Delp |
As the Master’s/Credential Program speaker,
Debra Eslava-Burton offered an inspiring story. One
of six children who grew up in poverty in San Francisco, the Principal
Leadership Institute student is the first in her family to graduate
from college. “It may have taken me 30 years to graduate from
Berkeley,” said Eslava-Burton, “but I have arrived!”
She implored her fellow graduates to “be inclusive and compassionate…
We won’t sell out children. We know better and we must do better.”
Doctoral program speaker, Verda Delp, a graduate in
Language, Literacy, and Culture, discussed how much she drew from her
year-long study and love affair of understanding the themes of literature,
including integrity, compassion and respect.

| Assemblymember Carol Liu |
On the afternoon before graduation ceremonies, Liu
was able to speak at the GSE’s annual Commencement Research Seminar.
In her presentation, entitled The Challenges Facing California Higher
Education in the Next Decade, she discussed issues such as affordability
and the need for a student fee policy, disparities in undergraduate
participation rates, enrollment growth and budget deficit projections,
and the growing demand for highly educated workers. Liu also outlined
several legislative bills making their way through the California Assembly.
