Cal Prep to Add Eighth Grade in Second Year

The Cal Prep Choir joined the GSE Chorus for a concert and singalong in Tolman Hall on
May 11.

The California College Preparatory Academy (Cal Prep), UC Berkeley's charter school venture with Aspire Public Schools, will expand to 150 students in grades 6–8 next school year, with more waiting to get in.

The Cal Prep community has been very supportive of the school, which began with 90 students in grades 6 and 7 last years. Eighty-four percent of the parents who responded to an April survey indicated that they "agreed" or "strongly agreed" with the statement that Cal Prep was doing a good job in educating their child.

UC Berkeley undergraduates who tutor Cal Prep students in mathematics, science and language arts, and serve as role models and mentors have aided student success. In March 86, percent of the Cal Prep students passed their exhibitions — major projects that include a formal paper and presentation judged by UC Berkeley faculty and other community members. The remaining students are expected to pass by the close of the academic year.

On May 15, the school held a mini-summit that explored major issues in preparing students with quality and empirically supported mathematics instruction. The summit included Cal Prep’s math teacher and principal, UC Berkeley faculty and graduate students, and other teachers from Aspire and East Bay schools. This summer, more than 30 Cal Prep students are participating in UC Berkeley and community college enrichment programs. Vista Community College (soon to be Berkeley City College) will be offering a Spanish course to the 7th and 8th graders and their parents for college credit next year.

For more information, contact Cal Prep’s Co-Director of Research and Development Frank Worrell at (510) 643-4891 or by e-mail.
