Murphy-Graham Leads Evaluation of Honduras Education Program
Assistant adjunct professor Erin Murphy-Graham is principal investigator (with Patrick McEwan from Wellesley College) of a new $1.28 million grant awarded to Scientific Evaluation for Global Action, a UC Berkeley Organized Research Unit.
The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation grant will be used to conduct an impact evaluation of the Sistema de Aprendizaje Tutorial (Tutorial Learning System, SAT) program in Honduras, an innovative model of secondary education currently implemented in Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala. The program was created by a Colombian organization, Fundación para la Aplicación y Enseñanza de las Ciencias (Foundation for the Application and Teaching of Science), which has plans to implement a revised version of SAT, called Preparation for Social Action in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia, with additional funding from the Hewlett Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Honduran impact evaluation will provide critical information about the effectiveness of the model that will inform its expansion in Africa.
