Seyer-Ochi Wins American Cultures Teaching Award
Assistant Professor Ingrid Seyer Ochi was recognized as the 2008–09 recipient of the American Cultures Innovation in Teaching Award. This new award recognizes the use of pedagogical developments to enhance students' learning experience in the American Cultures classroom. Seyer-Ochi’s teaching and design of the American Cultures course, Education Ed40AC: "Diversity and In(Equality) in and Beyond Schools," was recognized for its innovative teaching practices and contributing to the overall quality of the American Cultures learning environment across campus. The submissions for the award represented some of Berkeley's most renowned and respected scholars.
“Being the first recipient of this award was particularly meaningful for me given the legacy of Carol Stack and Lily Wong Fillmore’s work almost 20 years ago to start American Cultures at Berkeley,” said Seyer-Ochi. “The American Cultures community has been central to my efforts to link research and teaching on critical issues of race, ethnicity and diversity, so it is a privilege to be honored by them.”
Seyer-Ochi received the award at a ceremony on May 13 officiated by Ethnic Studies professor Ron Takaki and Vice-Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion, Gabor Basri.
