The Celebration
of Children’s Literature is a solid attraction
that draws families from the local community to the School of
Education on Cal Day, but for this year's 14th iteration, "We did more with less," said Steven Cohen, who organized the event.
With half as many authors and illustrators, musicians,
costumed character characters this year compared with 2007, and
the barbecue and lightly attended educational panels and workshops
eliminated, the free community event still drew record crowds in
and around Tolman Hall, unprecedented book and CD sales and more
than twice the number of spectators jammed into the Children's Room
of the Education-Psychology Library for storytelling. They also
enjoyed a book fair with author signings, bookmaking with Bay
Area Writing Project teacher consultant Linda Block, music with Gary
Lapow and the magnetic appearance of Curious George.
Cohen says that the good turnout was due, at least
in part, to warm weather as well as the presence of established
Bay Area children's authors Gennifer
Choldenko, Marissa
Moss, Elisa Kleven and Thacher
Hurd, storyteller Joel ben
Izzy and musical performer Gary
Lapow.

Talent Development Program, Penguin

Student Store and the Graduate School of Education Alumni
Association.
