Pearson Elected Chair of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
GSE Dean and Professor P. David Pearson has been elected chair of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing by its members. Pearson will serve as Chair and Vice Chair of the Commission through December 2007. They are eligible to serve one additional term if elected. Joining Pearson as vice chair will be John G. Kenney, a Physics teacher at Calaveras High School in San Andreas. The two expressed their dedication to the work of the Commission and thanked their fellow commissioners for expressing faith in their leadership.
The major purpose of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is to serve as a state standards board for educator preparation for the public schools of California, the licensing and credentialing of professional educators in the state, the enforcement of professional practices of educators, and the discipline of credential holders in the State of California.
The agency consists of 19 members, 15 voting members and four ex-officio, non-voting members. The Governor appoints 14 voting commissioners and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or his/her designee serves as the 15th voting Member. The four ex-officio members are selected one each by the major elements of the California higher education constituency: Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities; Regents of the University of California; California Postsecondary Education Commission; and the California State University.
