PLI Part of Leadership Plan Launched for San Francisco Schools

The Center for Urban School Leadership (CUSL), anchored by the Principal Leadership Institute, and three partner organizations — the San Francisco School Alliance, San Francisco Unified School District and Partners in School Innovation — have launched a new Leadership Initiative to recruit, prepare, support and retain leaders for more than 100 public schools in San Francisco and reverse the trend of principals and assistant principals leaving the district through attrition or retirement.

“Great leaders will help ensure that all of our students graduate from high school poised for success,” said Interim Superintendent of San Francisco Unified School District Gwen Chan, when she outlined the initiative’s five-year plan at a gathering of school and community leaders at Thurgood Marshall High School on December 7.

Built upon a research-driven vision for effective school leadership, the initiative is expected to transform the way San Francisco attracts and supports administrators through: expanded recruitment efforts; revised hiring and placement procedures; intensive support for new administrators; expanded coaching and intervention strategies; stronger professional development networks; and implementation of effective evaluation strategies.During the pilot year, CUSL is implementing monthly professional development for all principals and assistant principals.
