'53 Robert Ryal Miller (General Secondary Credential) also earned his Ph.D. in history at Cal. He has recently written a biography: Juan Alvarado, Governor of California, 1836-1842, published by the University of Oklahoma Press. The book deals with the lively politician who led California during the period when Mexico became independent from Spain. Robert Ryal Miller is now a professor emeritus of history at CSU Hayward.


 

'61 Pat Maxwell Malmstrom (née Maxwell, General Secondary Credential) recently authored the book, The Art of Parenting Twins, published by Ballantine. She is the founder and president of Twin Services, Inc. ® also known as TWINLINE®, a national resource helping parents cope with "twinshock." '62 Patricia Player (née Barnard, General Secondary Credential) was triumphant in her campaign to win a seat on the West Contra Costa Unified School Board. She is looking forward to forming additional partnerships with Berkeley's School of Education to get more credentialed teachers and service-learning projects for the schools in her district. She has taught 33 years in Richmond and Pinole high schools.


'63 Shirlianne Hilker Olsen (M.A.) writes that, "I am currently a reading specialist teaching first graders one-on-one in the Collaborative Literacy Intervention Program (CLIP), and fourth grade groups under Title I." She received a mini-grant from the Placentia--Yerba Linda Educational Foundation to provide books and tapes of high interest to low-level, fourth-grade leaders. She lives in Placentia.


'70 Bob Dickerson (M.A., Secondary English/P.E. Credentials) writes from Fremont that he is interested in secondary reading, ELD, sheltered English, and secondary English.


'70 Liz Rondelle (formerly Liz Logan Zellhoefer), (Multiple Subject Credential), works as a Title VII literacy teacher and ELD immersion teacher in a school that includes many children of farmworkers. She also teaches English at night in an adult education program for agricultural workers. She's interested in collaborating on an article or research about at-risk fifth-graders tutoring at-risk first-graders. She lives in Santa Cruz.


'71 Nancy Jo Sale (née Parle, Secondary Credential) is living in Pleasant Hill and is interested in learning stations in the secondary classroom (students teaching themselves) and in new teacher support.


'73 John R. Thelin (M.A., Ph.D.) has received national recognition in two areas in the past year. He received a major research grant from the Spencer Foundation for a historical study of the development of research universities in the South, circa 1890 to 1990. In November 1999 John Thelin, who is a professor at the University of Kentucky, took office as president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). He will give the organization's presidential address at their national conference in Sacramento from November 16-20, 2000.


'80 David Forbes (Ph.D.) writes from Brooklyn that he is now an assistant professor of education at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and that he teaches in the School Guidance and Counseling Program.


'86 Denise (Dee) Gagnon (M.A.) is the deputy director of program services at Larkin Street Youth Center in San Francisco and is interested in the psychology of juvenile delinquents, homeless youth, and HIV-positive children.


'87 Elin Kordahl Saltveit (née Kordahl, Single Subject Credential in Math) recently published Hit Enter: 50+ Computer Projects for K-5 Classrooms. From Heinemann, the publisher: "The focus is on learning across the curriculum as students create graphs from scratch, write and illustrate their own stories, label imaginary insects, and much more." Elin Kordahl Saltveit is computer education director for the Schools of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco, where she also coordinates educational technology projects for the national network of Sacred Heart schools. '88 Marisi Nerad (Ph.D.) has published the results of her study, Ph.D.s--10 Years Later. The study, sponsored by UC Berkeley's Graduate Division, follows the career paths of 6000 recipients of Ph.D.s from 61 different doctorate-granting universities. The results are surprising and debunk many of the legends of the taxi-driving doctoral recipients. Dr. Nerad found that even among those who did their Ph.D.s in English, respondents overwhelmingly felt they would still get the same degree if they had it to do over again. A summary of her results is available in a special issue of the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) Communicator for fall 1999.
'90 Corinn Brown (Multiple Subject Credential) is now a manager at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
'93 Julie Schwerdtfeger (M.A., Multiple Subject Credential) teaches at Corrine Seeds University Elementary School at UCLA.
