Lily Wong Fillmore Breaks New Ground in Work with Native Children in Alaska

The state of Alaska has adopted a high school exit exam similar to the one California plans to implement in 2004, but Alaska's timetable is several years ahead of California's. "Kids in Alaska who are now sophomores will take the test for the first time in 2000," said Professor Lily Wong Fillmore, who came up with some surprising findings when she recently studied how the test may impact children in rural, native villages. "Seniors have to pass the test by 2002 or receive a certificate of attendance, rather than a high school diploma." Educators in Alaska are predicting a failure rate as high as 90% in rural villages.

PACE Gets New Direction and Funding

Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE) has had major developments in its goals and its funding. Recently the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation announced a $900,000 grant that will support PACE's research efforts for the next three years.

Robert Ruddell Retires after 37-Year Teaching Career at Berkeley

Robert (Bob) Ruddell has announced his retirement from the Graduate School of Education after a distinguished career of teaching and research that began in the era of the Free Speech Movement and extended into the new millennium. His work on early literacy and influential teachers have earned him the highest honors in his field--the International Reading Association's William S. Gray Citation of Merit for lifetime achievement, and election to the International Reading Hall of Fame.

Prentice Starkey Receives Major Grant for International Study of Children's Early Math Learning

UC Berkeley Graduate School of Education faculty member Prentice Starkey and Institute of Human Development researcher Alice Klein have teamed up on one of the first of a new and unique series of grants designed to improve teaching and learning from preschool through twelfth grade.

Professor Meets with All 200 Students in Lecture Class

Michael Ranney, an associate professor who is teaching Introduction to Cognitive Science, met personally with all 200 students in his large, undergraduate lecture class. "I want to get more of an idea of what the individuals in the class are like, so they're not just a face in the crowd," he said. "That way I don't feel so much like a talking head, either."

Elyse Eidman-Aadahl: Working with Teachers in Mongolia

Elyse Eidman-Aadahl, who teaches in the area of Language, Literacy, and Culture, has been spending her free time for the last year and a half travelling to remote regions of Mongolia, often by jeep, horse, or even camel.
