Professor Alan H. Schoenfeld has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Education. Membership in the academy is limited to 125 persons whose accomplishments in the field of education are judged to be outstanding.
Schoenfeld is a professor of education and mathematics at Berkeley, and is chair of the faculty at the Graduate School of Education. He is an internationally-known scholar whose research is on thinking, teaching, and learning, with an emphasis on mathematics. One focus of his work has been on problem solving. His book, Mathematical Problem Solving, characterizes what it means to "think mathematically" and describes a research-based undergraduate course in mathematical problem solving.
Two other focal points of his work are understanding and teaching the concepts of functions and graphs, and assessment. Schoenfeld heads the Balanced Assessment Project, which is developing alternative assessments for K-12 mathematics curricula. He chaired the National Science Foundation's Working Group On Assessment In Calculus, and serves on the National Research Council's Board on Testing and Assessment. He has chaired or served on numerous policy boards for professional organizations and at the local, state, and national levels. *
