A search committee appointed by Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien has begun its work to select a new dean for Berkeley's Graduate School of Education. The new dean will replace William D. Rohwer Jr., who announced last fall his intention to retire as dean after serving in the position for six years.
According to search committee chair William A. Lester Jr., associate dean of the College of Chemistry, he is hopeful the new dean will be at the Graduate School of Education by next fall.
"I'm delighted to be involved in the School's search for a new dean," he commented. "The Graduate School of Education is an important part of the Berkeley campus. Serving on the committee has been a very valuable interaction for me, and has allowed me to get to know some of my colleagues in the Graduate School of Education in a way that I might not have otherwise."
In addition to Professor Lester, members of the search committee include Gail Anderson, superintendent of the Piedmont Unified School District (and a GSE alumna); Joyce Burks, executive secretary to the dean; Professor Andrea diSessa, education; Professor Sarah Warshauer Freedman, education; Professor Norton Grubb, education; Professor Jerome Karabel, sociology; Mary E. Riordan and Lori Tewksbury, education graduate students; and Professor Rhona Weinstein, psychology. *
