Celebration of Children's Literature Returns April 17
The Graduate School of Education's annual festival of children's literature will take place
this year at our home base, Tolman Hall, on Cal Day, Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's
free event will feature book signings by many of the Bay Area's top authors and illustrators of children's
books, storytelling and concerts for kids, and panels and workshops on reading, writing, and books for children.
Writers and illustrators featured this year include Joyce Carol Thomas, popular and lyrical author of chapter
and picture books, who will also be speaking on the universal appeal for children of African American
literature. Robert San Souci will attend again this year, fresh from his triumph with Mulan, the inspiration
for the movie. Other guest artists include José-Luis Orozco and Elisa Kleven, author and illustrator of the
beautiful Latin American songbook, De Colores and of Diez Deditos and Other Play Rhymes and Action Songs from
Latin America. José-Luis Orozco will also give a concert and singalong for kids. Marissa Moss, creator of the
hilarious Amelia's Notebook series, will be making her first appearance at the Celebration.
Others featured include Teri Sloat, whose exquisite books often have an Alaska or Inuit subject; the
delightful author/illustrator Denys Cazet; Maxine Schur, who wrote the bestselling Samantha's Surprise,
A Christmas Story, and the wonderful feminist folktale, The Marvelous Maze; Thacher Hurd, local Berkeley
author/illustrator and creator of the famous Art Dog; Ji-Li Jiang, author of Red Scarf Girl, her unforgettable
memoir of growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution; and School of Ed alumna and talented author,
Elizabeth Scarboro, who teaches at M.L.K. Middle School in Berkeley.
Other attractions will include book-making workshops for kids, and a panel discussion on how children's
illustrators turn words into pictures.
The Celebration of Children's Literature is part of Cal Day, the Berkeley campus's
yearly open house. Most departments will be offering attractions that day, and all campus museums will be
open and free. Come and visit!
