I knew there was a tremendous amount of innovative work going on in the Graduate School of Education, but I was amazed when I recently reviewed the complete list of sponsored research projects underway here.

Largest Gift Ever to GSE Expands Flanders Fellowship Program
The Graduate School of Education recently received the largest private gift in its 107-year history. Mary Jane Brinton, a loyal friend of the School, has donated over $1 million to help support graduate students who are committed to working with disadvantaged youth in inner-city schools.
Marcia Linn Receives New National Award for Educational Research
GSE Professor Marcia Linn has been named by the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) one of two national recipients of a new award to honor those meeting the highest standards in educational research. The award was created to recognize, "Outstanding Achievement in Educational Research that Improved Children's Learning and Understanding."

Celebration of Children's Literature Returns April 17
The Graduate School of Education's annual festival of children's literature will take place this year at our home base, Tolman Hall, on Cal Day, Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's free event will feature book signings by many of the Bay Area's top authors and illustrators of children's books, storytelling and concerts for kids, and panels and workshops on reading, writing, and books for children.

Miranda Heller Gift Funds DTE Conference and Initiatives
On October 3, 1998 the Developmental Teacher Education (DTE) program held the first of what will become an annual event-the Educators Developing Together Conference, at the Haas Clubhouse in Strawberry Canyon. The conference was a preliminary step in DTE's efforts to bring together current students, program graduates, master teachers, and other educators who work with DTE.

Student Athletes Break Stereotypes in GSE Classes
The School of Education has developed courses about student athletes that break through biased images of these students who are often in the spotlight. The inspiration behind the GSE offerings in this area has come from Professor Herb Simons, who teaches in the Education in Language, Literacy, and Culture area of study, and has been a lifelong sports fan.

NSF Grant Supports SCOPE Project to Make Science Learning Come Alive
The National Science Foundation has awarded $1.84 million dollars to a GSE-based project that seeks to teach science by involving students in controversies that researchers are actively debating. Professor Marcia Linn directs this innovative project, named Science Controversies On-line: Partnerships in Education (SCOPE). One wing of the project, the SCOPE Research Forum, will provide leading scientists worldwide with an Internet network to share information and theories about hotly disputed topics in science.

Professional Development Program and Math Department Team Up to Create New Course for Future Math Teachers
The Stuart Foundation of San Francisco has awarded $835,000 to the Department of Mathematics over three years to support preparation of high school mathematics teachers.

The Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP), grande dame of California subject-matter projects, celebrated its 25th anniversary on Saturday, November 14th, 1998, at its home-UC Berkeley.

Schoolwide Efforts to Aid Victims of Hurricane Mitch
In response to the disaster wrought by Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua and Honduras, GSE students Myriam Casimir and Tico Arenas coordinated a relief drive in the GSE.
Doctoral Student Named Outstanding Community College Instructor of the Year
GSE doctoral student Cathleen Kennedy was named the Outstanding Community College teacher in the country for 1998-99.
