Dean William D. Rohwer Jr. and Professor Robert B. Ruddell have announced a gift of $50,000 to the David H. Russell Memorial Fellowship from the estate of Eleanor Robison. The fund was established in 1968 to honor David Russell, who served as a professor in the Graduate School of Education at Berkeley from 1942 until his death in 1965. During his eminent career, Professor Russell also served as president of the American Education Research Association and the National Council of Teachers of English.
In regard to this important gift, Professor Ruddell said, "Eleanor Robison was a master teacher and a true friend of education. Over the years that I have known Eleanor, she held David Russell in the highest esteem and wished to honor his memory through support of graduate students.
"David Russell provided a critical mentoring influence on my own career in my first years at Berkeley. He held a sterling reputation as a scholar in the field of literacy research, and influenced the classroom practice of literally hundreds of teachers throughout the United States."
In acknowledging the gift to Nancy Tooker, niece of the late Eleanor Robison, Dean Rohwer noted, "Our commitment to students at the Graduate School of Education is underscored by this major gift to the David H. Russell Memorial Fellowship. We are grateful to Eleanor not only for remembering Professor Russell, but also for supporting our student scholars."
The Russell Fellowship is given to support students who are pursuing advanced degrees in the field of reading and the language arts.
