in San Francisco. Each year the incentive program
provides scholarships to approximately a dozen
seniors from the San Francisco USD. At the event,
Sec. Riley shared with Dean Rohwer his views on
the importance of public higher education
and congratulated the dean on the School's
continued record of success.

Using the Net to Foster a
Engaging students in scientific discovery through their participation
in productive and appropriate activities on the Internet is the focus
of the three-year Knowledge Integration Environment (KIE) project
recently funded for $1.5 million by the National Science Foundation.

School Opens Service Learning Center
Through a federal grant awarded by the Corporation for National
and Community Service, UC Berkeley has established a Service
Learning Center in the Graduate School of Education.The center
serves as a national model to demonstrate the ways in which service
learning can enhance students' academic development.

AERA Draws Record Number
This year San Francisco served as the host city for the
1995 Annual Meeting of the American Education Research Association,
held April 18-22. Approximately 11,250 people attended the event.

Summer Institute to Address Joys,
W. Fred Ellis, an organizer of the Summer Institute in Urban Education
at UC Berkeley (June 26 to August 4) said an urban school "is probably
the best place to learn how to teach in the world."

NATIONAL WRITING CENTER
Professor Sarah Warshauer Freedman, director
of the National Center for the Study of Writing
and Literacy, was honored with tributes for her
many contributions to the field of writing and
literacy research at a party celebrating NCSWL's
tenth anniversary during the AERA Conference
in San Francisco on April 18.
Prof. Robert Calfee (left) of Stanford University,
Freedman's doctoral adviser and currently director
of a center-sponsored research project, was one of
the featured speakers.
