Book Fair and Signings by Authors and Illustrators

Lisa Brown is the award-winning author and illustrator of How to Be and the creator of the Baby, Be of Use instructional board book series for busy parents. She designed and illustrated How to Dress for Every Occasion by The Pope and the New York Times bestseller The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming, by Lemony Snicket, to whom she is allegedly married. Her most recent illustrated children’s book is Sometimes You Get What You Want.

Diana Cohn is the award-winning author of Dream Carver, Si Se Puede! Yes We Can! Janitor Strike in LA, Mr. Goethe’s Garden and The Bee Tree. Her newest book Namaste! will be available in Spring 2009. She lives with her husband in Sausalito.

Ying Chang Compestine is the author of eight picture books including the highly acclaimed The Real Story of Stone Soup, D is for Dragon Dance and The Runaway Rice Cake. Her recent book for young adults, Revolution is Not a Dinner Party, an autobiographical novel of life during China's Cultural Revolution, was honored by the American Librarian Association Best Books For Young Adults, among many other awards. Ms. Compestine is also the author of three Asian cookbooks for adults and three new food-related children’s books due out later this year.

Thacher Hurd is the creator of more than 20 popular picture books including Mama Don't Allow, Art Dog, Mystery on the Docks and the board book Zoom City. His latest picture book, Bad Frogs will be published in March. His space adventure novel for older children, Bongo Fish, will be published by Holt next year, and he is collaborating with local author/illustrator Elisa Kleven on a picture book, The Weaver.

Marisa Montes (11:30–12:45) is the award-winning author of bilingual children’s books, including Los Gatos Black on Halloween, which won the 2008 ALA Pura Belpré Gold Medal for art (with Yuyi Morales) and the Silver Medal for text. She also wrote Juan Bobo Goes to Work, an ALA Pura Belpré honor book, which she translated into Spanish. Her young adult time-travel mystery, A Circle of Time, won the 2002 WILLA Literary Award. She has also written a bilingual series for Scholastic called Get Ready for Gabí.

Yuyi Morales, who migrated from Mexico to the USA in 1994, is one of the most celebrated contemporary Latino children’s book illustrators and authors. She is a three-time winner of the prestigious Pura Belpre Medal and two-time recipient of the Tomas Rivera Award for her illustrations in Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book; Los Gatos Black on Halloween (with Marisa Montes) as well as her latest, Just In Case: A Trickster Tale and Spanish Alphabet Book. Morales' book, Little Night, won the 2008 Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators highest honor. Harvesting Hope; The Story of Cesar Chavez, (written by Kathleen Krull), has been honored with awards from The Christophers, The American Sociological Association, Child Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle and School Library Journal.

Todd Parr is the New York Times best-selling author/illustrator of 33 popular children's books including The Peace Book, Reading Makes You Feel Good, It's Okay to Be Different, The Family Book, The Feelings Book, and his most recent, The I Love You Book. His Emmy®-nominated, award-winning children's television show, ToddWorld, airs around the world.

Deborah Lee Rose's newest book, The Twelve Days of Springtime, humorously celebrates school gardens. She twice won the National Parenting Publications Gold Award for previous "Twelve Days" books. Her other titles, including Into the A,B,Sea, are recommended on state and national best book lists for children.

Robert San Souci is the author of some 85 books for young readers, including two Caldecott Honor Books and three Coretta Scott King Honor Books. San Souci also wrote the screen story for Disney's animated film, Mulan. His most recent books include Triple-Dare to Be Scared: Thirteen Further Freaky Tales and As Luck Would Have It: Adapted from The Brothers Grimm.


Special Event: Dear President Obama

In the wake of President Barrack Obama’s stirring election victory, Jory John, program director of the Mission District nonprofit tutoring and writing center 826 Valencia, asked students from 826 centers around the country to provide advice and guidance to their new President. John compiled and edited the wonderful collection into the book Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country: Kids' Letters to President Obama. Released on the eve of President Obama’s Inauguration, the book became an overnight sensation.

Join John and some student authors as they read letters from the popular book, inspire you to write and mail your own letters to President Obama as he approaches his 100th day in office May 1st. Note: Materials and postage supplied


Music: Concert/Sing-Along for Children

Gary Lapow has performed his music for millions of children, parents and teachers in both the United States and Canada. The Berkeley resident has appeared on radio and television, at large festivals and in numerous concert halls, schools and libraries. He has made nine recordings.


Storytelling

Walker Brents III has captivated children and adults with stories in schoolyards, classrooms and other venues since coming to the Bay Area from Texas in 1983. He frequently performs at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum reciting Hindu, Arabic and Southeast Asian myths. His retellings of various Greek myths and American folklore have appeared in language arts textbooks.

Kirk Waller has been involved in theater, public speaking, mime and, of course, storytelling for more than 20 years. His stories and folktales from around the world are a dynamic blend of musicality, mime and emotion. Waller has appeared at the Bay Area Storytelling Festival, National Speakers Association Conference and other festivals and venues throughout California. His first CD project, Quack, Gabble, Squawk and other Animal Tales was a recipient of a 2008 Parent's Choice Foundation Award. Sister Water and Misses Wind, his first children's book, will be published in spring 2009.
