J
ody Sherman is interested in cognitive development in young children, particularly with respect to early algebra, skill acquisition, symbol use, and representation. She is especially interested in the implications that developmental research has for educational changes and instructional techniques. Furthermore, her interests extend to clinical research areas, including academic achievement and behavior in relation to neurodevelopmental disorders such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), particularly among Aboriginal children.
Her areas of specialization/interest include:
Children's misunderstanding of mathematical symbols (particularly the equal sign), symbolic representation, relational reasoning, mathematical cognition, and teachers' views about children's mathematical development
