Arts Education Initiative

General Information

The Arts Education Initiative (AEI), based at the University of California, Berkeley's Graduate School of Education, seeks to foster the integration of the arts throughout K-12 education through employing arts learning in the development of new teachers and school leaders, from recruitment through preservice preparation into professional practice.

Program Description

The AEI brings together leaders from professional education programs that prepare teachers and principals, in partnership with artists, arts educators and leaders from K-12 schools, in an effort to integrate the arts into the education of preservice teachers, principals and K-12 students. Through its work, the AEI is promoting a conceptual shift in the role of the arts in K-12 public education away from arts as embellishment and towards the arts as central to school curriculum and culture.

The primary goals of the project are:

  • To make the arts central in the professional learning of new teachers and school leaders in preservice credential programs at AEI member institutions
  • To enable graduates of AEI programs to begin their careers already prepared to provide many opportunities for their K-12 students to learn both in and through the arts
  • To foster similar changes in preservice professional education at other institutions in California and beyond

Funded by a generous grant from The Ford Foundation.
