Developmental Teacher Education

Thank you for your vocal support for the Developmental Teacher Education Program. Current plans call for re-opening DTE for the next admissions cycle with applications due the beginning of December 2010, for enrollment in Fall semester, 2011. Details are still being worked out so please check back for further updates. An (unofficial) Facebook page has been created for friends of DTE.

The Developmental Teacher Education Program (DTE) is based on the premise that the quality of classroom learning is substantially improved when teachers understand children's cognitive and social development. DTE provides intensive study of developmental theories and their educational implications through coursework and student teaching. Students and program faculty interact to increase our ability to design an academically challenging, equitable and socially just curriculum for children from many backgrounds. One of the ways in which this ability is developed is through the arts.

Volunteer or paid experience with elementary school age children, preferably in public school settings, is expected of all applicants. Although the DTE program draws heavily on psychological theory and research, students from all undergraduate backgrounds are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in applicants with background in the visual and performing arts and/or an eagerness to participate in exploring ways to deepen their own learning and that of their students through experiences with art forms such as poetry, painting, music, dance, drama, literature, film, and new media.
