Autism Treatment is Symptom-Specific: Which Treatments Treat Which Symptoms?

Interested in more effectively treating autism based on the child's specific
symptoms? Tired of seeing the one-size-fits-all model of service delivery
in the schools? In this session you will learn what the various symptoms of
autism mean for learning, and how features of treatments approaches can be
selectively used to address specific deficits. We'll discuss separating
treatment method (e.g., ABA or TEACCH) from curriculum content using a
developmental focus. You will learn an approach to more effectively
design and tailor strategies and interventions that fit specific symptoms

Biological Beginnings of Autism

Have you always wanted to better understand the role of brain development in autism, and yet find researchers in the field of neurobiology difficult to understand? Looking for the current thinking on the early beginnings of autism? Come hear the leading neuroscientist in the area of brain research in autism explain and discuss his ground breaking research. Dr. Courchesne will explain the underlying developmental neural defects that cause autistic behavior to emerge during the first years of life. This lecture will discuss the first studies to provide MRI and fMRI neuroimaging information about early growth and functional abnormalities in frontal lobes in autism, and new postmortem data that have provided the first quantitative and regional information about possible microstructural maldevelopment in frontal cortex.

Speaker Bios

photoDr. Eric Courchesne is a Professor of Neurosciences at the University of California San Diego and director of the Center for Autism Research at the San Diego Children's Hospital. His research is focused on the neurobiology of autism. His efforts have produced new information about the structural, functional and genetic bases of this disorder. His work has been recognized through publication in such journals as Science and the J of Neuroscience. Dr. Courchesne studies the brain wiring and genetic basis of autism, hoping to discover the causes of this mysterious disorder that afflicts one in 500 people. Bio | Abstract

photoDr. Jeff Wood is an Assistant Professor of Psychological Studies in Education at UCLA. He is also a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders. He has received multiple grants from the National Institute of Health and the Cure Autism Now Foundation to develop and test a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention for children with high-functioning autism, Asperger syndrome, and PDD-NOS. His current clinical trial focuses on adapting CBT to address emotional and social difficulties among elementary school-aged children with autism spectrum disorders. He has recently published a treatment study of CBT in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. school web site

photoDr. Bryna Siegel is a developmental psychologist, professor of Psychiatry at UCSF and Director of the Autism Clinic.  She will be talking about her latest book Helping Children with Autism Learn: Treatment Approaches for Parents and Professionals, Oxford University Press, (2003) which describes an integrated ‘developmental behaviorism’ as a foundation for designing treatment of autism-specific difficulties in perception, processing and retrieval of information.  She is also the author of the newly-published Pervasive Developmental Disorders Screening Test (PDDST-II) for early identification of autism (Psych Corp,/ Harcourt Assessment, 2004), as well as The World of the Autistic Child: Understanding and Treating Autistic Spectrum Disorders (Oxford Univ. Press, 1996), and What About Me? Siblings of Developmentally Disabled Children (Plenum Press, 1994).  Her newest research project, JumpStart is a model for helping children with autism ‘learn-to-learn’, and for their parents to learn to use and evaluate integrated wrap-around home and school services. Dr. Siegel lectures frequently to parents and professionals internationally on treatment of autism.
