Undergraduate Minor in Education
Requirements
The Education Minor consists of 3 components: a core required course, 3
units of fieldwork, and three electives.
1) EDUCATION 190: Current Issues in Education (4 units), the core course of the Minor, is required of all Education Minor students and is offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. It immerses students in current educational philosophies, methods and controversies.
FALL AND SPRING SEMESTER
ENROLLMENT: As a class entry code is required during these semesters, students will not be able to enroll in EDUC 190 during telebears. Students who attempt to enroll during telebears will automatically be put on the wait list. However, getting your name on the waitlist does not help with enrollment, as the wait list is NOT ranked, and is not used for enrollment during these semesters.
The enrollment process for EDUC 190 during the Fall and Spring semesters begins during the first class session of each section, where students participate in an application process which will determine who will receive a class entry code to enroll. Therefore, students MUST attend the first class session of one of these sections and participate in this process if they wish to enroll. Class entry codes are distributed after all sections of the class have met once.
EDUC 190 is an extremely popular class, with many students, both upper and lower division, turned away during the Fall and Spring semesters. Declaring the Education Minor will not guarantee your enrollment during these semesters, but will give you priority. If you have senior status and are an Education Minor declared student, you will be guaranteed enrollment in one of the sections of the class.
SUMMER SEMESTER ENROLLMENT: Enrolling in EDUC 190 during the summer semester does not require a class entry code and you can enroll during Tele-BEARS.
2) FIELDWORK: Three (3) units of minor approved field work are required of all Education Minor students. Education 97/197, the field studies course, has a number of programs from which to choose. As there are some field programs under Education 97/197 that are not approved for the Minor, make sure to enroll in one of the Education Minor Approved Field Sections. Descriptions of all sections of EDUC 97/197 are listed online at the Field Studies website and in binders at the reception counter in the Student Academic Services Office, 1600 Tolman Hall. Please note:
- To obtain the course control number for the program/section in which you are interested, contact the site coordinator for that program.
- Education 97 is for freshmen/sophomores and Education 197 is for juniors/seniors.
- Students may enroll in 1, 2 or 3 units of fieldwork within one semester and may take units over multiple semesters.
- Forty-five (45) hours of fieldwork per semester is equivalent to 1 academic unit.
- Students may take all 3 units in the same field studies program or may enroll in 2 or 3 separate programs.
- There are a few minor approved field studies programs outside of Education 97/197. Check each semester's course list (see below) for these programs.
- Petitioning field work: There is a petition process for fieldwork that
is not approved for the Minor. Students will need to review the Education Minor Fieldwork Student Petition Policies & Procedures and
submit the appropriate form.
3) ELECTIVES: Three (3) elective courses chosen from the Education Minor approved course list are required of all Education Minor students. This list states all the courses that are currently approved for the Minor. However, not all the elective courses on this list are offered every semester. Therefore, the UME Advisor posts the approved courses that will be offered for each semester (see below):
