Requirements for admission to the DTE program include:

  • Strong interest in understanding child development as a basis for elementary teaching.
  • Desire to meld theory with reflective practice.
  • Experience working with elementary school children, preferably in a public school setting.
  • 3 letters of recommendation - including one academic and one describing work with elementary age children (mandatory).
  • Undergraduate degree with 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in the junior and senior years.
  • Applications to the Graduate School of Education and the UC Berkeley Graduate Division.
  • Basic Skills Requirement (Required of all applicants to programs leading to a credential; 3 options for passing)

CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) or completion of a subject matter preparation program. Required of all applicants to programs leading to a multiple or single subject teaching credential. Please include a photocopy of your score report with your application if possible.

Since we believe that our students learn as much from one another as they do from the faculty, we strive to attract a class which is diverse in every way, including undergraduate major, outside interests and life experience. The qualifications below may enhance an applicant's chances for admission.

  • Inclusion of a personal/professional resume with your application.
  • Devotion to examining and rethinking personal assumptions.
  • Cross-cultural living experience in the US or abroad.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.
  • Familiarity with educational technology, web design.
  • Personal experience in the visual or performing arts
