Interdisciplinary Studies in Early Childhood (ISEC) Minor
Requirements for the ISEC Minor
The minor in Interdisciplinary Studies in Early Childhood (ISEC) offers students preparation in the fields of psychology, education and social welfare related to young children. There are two tracks from which to choose:
Option 1: Generalist track
Option 2: Child Development Teacher Permit track
Both tracks require the following courses:
- Perspectives on the Young Child in Society (Educ C116A/ Psych C104/ Soc Wel C128) -- This course conducts an application process during the first week of classes. Students admitted will be given a class entry code to enroll.
- Early Development and Education (Education 114A); and
- Developmental Psychology (Psychology 140), or Development During Infancy (Psychology 141).
Both tracks have additional course requirements. Please review the list of requirements for each track stated below.
All Minor courses must be taken for a letter grade, with a minimum GPA of 2.0 in each course.
Option 1: Generalist track
Students in the Generalist track will be required to take a total of five upper division courses, including the three required upper division courses and two additional courses from the General Electives List.

GENERALIST TRACK COURSE LISTS
Option 2: Child Development Teacher Permit Track
In addition to completing the requirements for an undergraduate minor at UC Berkeley, the Child Development Teacher Permit track requires additional course work and practicum experience to prepare students to teach in a licensed early care and education setting.
Students must take four required upper division courses, and 10 additional
units from the Child Development Teacher Permit Electives List, for a
total of 24 academic units. Upon completion of this track, the general
education units, and the additional experience requirement, students will
be able to apply for a Child Development Teacher Permit approved by the
