Interdisciplinary Studies in Early Childhood (ISEC) Minor


How to obtain your Child Development Teacher Permit


To obtain the Child Development Teacher Permit from the State of California, you must fulfill the following requirements:

Coursework Requirement:

24 Units in ECE/CD including core subject areas
The core subject areas and UC course that will satisfy each required core subject are:

  1. Child Growth and Development (Psychology 140 or Psychology 141)
  2. Child, Family and Community, or Child and Family Relations (Education C116A/ Psychology C104/ Social Welfare C128)
  3. Programs/Curriculum (Education 114A and Education 114D)

16 General Education units, including at least one course in each of the following areas:

  1. English and/or Language Arts
  2. Math and/or Science
  3. Social Science
  4. Humanities and/or Fine Arts

Experience Requirements: 175 days of 3+ hours per day of field placement/community practice within 4 years

NOTE: For those students who complete the requirements for the ISEC Minor's Child Development Teacher Permit track, ONLY A PORTION of the Experience Requirements for the Permit will be fulfilled. Students pursuing the Child Development Teacher Permit track will be strongly encouraged to participate in additional practicum courses, as well as experience in both campus and community early care and education settings, in order to meet ALL of the Child Development Teacher Permit Experience Requirements.

Students who complete the requirements for the Child Development Teacher Permit track, the general education units and the experience requirement (175 days of 3+ hours per day) may apply for a Child Development Teacher Permit that will allow them to teach in licensed early care and education settings.
