ED 97/197 Field Studies
How to Enroll
A. Registration Procedures for Enrolling in Permanent ED 97/197 Sections 2-63 Field Studies.
ED 97: If you are a freshman or a sophomore, you enroll in ED 97.
ED 197: If you are a junior or a senior (with at least 60 semester units prior to the semester), you enroll in ED 197.
Students interested in enrolling in the permanent ED 97/197 sections should:
- review the course descriptions of various ED 97/197 sections by clicking on the respective section number on the Quicklist. (Hard copy can also be found in the front desk binders in the Student Services Office, 1600 Tolman Hall and posted on the bulletin board in the Graduate School of Education first floor lobby.)
- choose the section in which you would like to enroll and contact the Contact Person who oversees the registration, enrollment and grading for the section for more information about the section before making a commitment.
- contact the Contact Person of the selected selection, apply for the volunteer position, obtain the Course Control Number (CCN) from the contact person and register for the class with the unit(s) you want by following the University's policy and procedures by the published deadline of each semester. Please Note: The Berkeley Public Schools provides on-site registration in the second floor lobby of Tolman Hall for sections 2-9 at the beginning of each semester. Please contact them at: bsv@berkeley.k12.ca.us.
- check in tele-Bears to make sure you are registered in the correct section noting that the CCN for the section is different semester by semester.

B. Registration Procedures for Enrolling in ED 97/197 Section 1 Field Studies (Independent Project)
ED 97: If you are a freshman or a sophomore, you enroll in ED 97.
ED 197: If you are a junior or a senior with at least 60 semester units prior to the semester, you enroll in ED 197.
ED 97/197 Section 1 is for students who wish to undertake field studies activities at a placement NOT already listed as a permanent ED 97/197 field placement site in the Quicklist. It is offered during fall and spring semesters and may be offered in summer semester as well.
Students interested in enrolling in ED 97/197 Section 1 should:
- find their own volunteer project. The volunteering activities can be tutoring, mentoring and student advising and must be educational related. Placements seeking volunteers are also listed in the section 1 binder in the Student Academic Services (SAS) office at 1600 Tolman Hall.
- submit a Proposal Form with a brief description of the project, number of units they want to enroll in, and signed by the Contact Person of the sponsoring agency. The completed form should be returned to the Student Academic Services front desk, 1600 Tolman Hall for review and approval before the add deadline of the semester and no later than the 5th week of the semester.
- passing the TB Test is required for tutors working with young school children. Cal students can take a TB test for a small fee at the Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way, (510) 642-2000.
- Students will be contacted by email and given the Course Control Number (CCN) if their proposal is approved.
- register in that section by following the University's policy and procedure; on registration and adding classes before the published deadline of each semester.
- check in Tele-Bears to make sure they are registered in the correct section noting that the CCN for the section is different semester by semester.

Timesheet: Students enrolled in Section 1 are required to keep their own timesheet under the supervision of the sponsoring agency Contact Person. Students have to log in hours every time they work, which should be verified and initialed by their sponsor. The completed and properly signed timesheet, indicating the total hours the students have worked, should be returned to the Graduate School of Education, Student Academic Services Office at 1600 Tolman Hall before the last day of Instruction for the semester. Note: Section 1 does NOT satisfy the Education Minor Field Studies requirement.
