A: Preferably at the beginning of the semester, but no later than the 5th week of the semester.
Q: What if I am or plan to be an Education Minor student?
A: Not all the sections are approved for the Education Minor. The approved sections to fulfill Ed Minor field work requirement are on the second half of the Quicklist page. Education Minor students must complete at least three units of fieldwork. Check the Education Minor web site for details.
Q: What are the grading options?
A: ED 97/197 must be taken as Pass/No Pass only. Failure to complete the minimum number of hours you sign up for will result in a No Pass grade. Retaking the course again will NOT change the grade to a Pass.
Q: How do I enroll in ED 97/197?
A: Browse the Quicklist, click on the section number for a detailed course description, contact the Contact Person for the section, decide on the unit(s) you want to register for, obtain the Course Control Number (CCN) from the Contact Person, and register for the class via tele-Bears before the add deadline.
Q: How many units can I take of ED 97/197?
A: Most sections allow you to enroll in 1-4 units. Refer to section descriptions for the unit restrictions. 4 units is the maximum field studies units a student can take per semester.
Q: How many hours do I have to volunteer?
A: For each unit you sign up for, you must do a minimum of 45 hours of field work, excluding travel time (1 unit=45 hours, 2 units=90 hours, 3 units=135 hours and 4 units=180 hours). Failure to complete the minimum number of hours will result in a No Pass grade.
Q: Can I get paid AND get units at the same time by enrolling in ED 97/197?
A: UC Berkeley will only grant units to students in exchange for their volunteering service by enrolling in field studies. It is possible for students to receive units and receive compensation if the agency is willing to do so out of their own funds.
Q: What is different about Section 1?
A: Section 1 is for Independent Projects where students find their own site to volunteer at and submit a proposal form (pdf) to the Student Academic Service Office for review and approval. The activities can be mentoring, teaching or tutoring but it must be education-related.
Q: How do I enroll in Section1?
A: Students must submit a completed Proposal Form (pdf) for section 1 by the registration deadline to SAS Office at 1600 Tolman Hall. If approved, the student and the sponsor person will be contacted by email and given the Course Control Number to register for the class by the University published deadline for registration. The student is required to keep a timesheet of their field studies work hours (timesheet (pdf)) . The completed time sheet should be verified by the sponsor and returned to SAS by the end of instruction in order to receive a passing grade.
Q: Does the Course Control Number for each section remain the same each semester?
A: No. The Course Control Number for each section changes each semester. It is very important for the students to get the correct CCN and register in the correct class and double check the registration information in Tele-Bears (obtain the CCN for permanent section from the section Contact Person and from the ED 97/197 staff coordinator for section 1 after the student's proposal form is approved).

Q: How do I start my own ED 97/197 section?
A: Agencies are recommended to start under Section 1. Only after a few semesters of proven satisfactory student enrollment (at least 10 volunteers each semester in their section 1), then the agency may petition to set up a permanent ED 97/197 section. Click to download the petition forms (six parts in total). Completed forms must be submitted to the ED 97/197 staff coordinator at least five weeks prior to the start of the semester for the committee to review.
Q: What are the advantages to being an ED 97/197 Section 1 rather than a permanent section?
A: Under Section 1, the agency is only responsible for monitoring students' performance and hours, verify and sign the time sheet for the student. The agency is not required to update section descriptions or recommend grades for students.
Q: What are the disadvantages to being Section 1?
A: Under Section 1, an agency must actively advertise and recruit for volunteers and assist students in completion of the proposal form.
Q: What is the role of the Contact Person for the permanent ED 97/197 section?
A: The contact person for a permanent ED 97/197 section is required to respond to inquiries from prospective volunteers, give out the Course Control Number (CCN) to students for their section, work closely with the ED 97/197 staff coordinator on registration issues, review the accuracy of the class roster sent to them electronically and contact students for any discrepancies, monitor students' performance and submit grades to the Instructor of Record and copy the ED 97/197 staff coordinator by the end of instruction of each semester. Also, the contact person is required to submit changes/updates of their section description and contact information to the UC Berkeley ED 97/197 staff coordinator via email: ed97_197@berkeley.edu or phone: (510) 642-5345.
Q: Does the Course Control Number (CCN) for a particular section remain the same each semester?
A: No. The CCN for each section changes each semester. The ED 97/197 staff coordinator will provide the CCN to the section Contact Person. Therefore students interested in enrolling in any ED 97/197 permanent sections should contact the Contact Person for details. It is very important for students to get the correct CCN and register in the correct class. We recommend that the Contact Person ask students to double check their registration information in Tele-Bears to confirm.
