Modeling, Developing, and Assessing Scientific Inquiry Skills Using a Computer-Based Inquiry Support Environment

In this project, researchers from UC Berkeley work with elementary and middle school teachers from the Berkeley, Bishop, and Paharo Public Schools. The emphasis is on enabling young learners to develop widely useful skills for collaborative inquiry and reflective learning. Software and curricula are being created that enable young students to learn how to learn via inquiry and to reflect on the cognitive, social, and metacognitive processes that are involved. The project is conducting instructional trials in public school classrooms to determine if the various curricular activities and accompanying software lead to improvements in students' inquiry learning and reflection skills, as well as to their metacognitive development in general.

Barbara White is the principal investigator.
