Technology-Enhanced Learning in Science
(TELS)

TELS is a national center for learning and teaching established by the National Science Foundation to improve instruction in science, mathematics, and engineering. The special focus of TELS is research investigating how instructional technology can benefit teaching and learning in science. Through this research, the universities and school districts participating in TELS seek to increase the numbers and diversity of teachers who are using innovative, proven, technologyenhanced science curricula to impart key scientific concepts and methods to their students. The eight TELS partner institutions and six participating school districts are coordinating activities to:

• learn how instructional technology can improve science education for students in grades 6–12;

• supervise and support graduate students who will be tomorrow’s leaders in science education;

• develop and test curricular materials that use innovative software and simulations to help students explore key scientific concepts;

• provide professional development that helps teachers take full advantage of technological tools embedded in proven, powerful science curricula.

Principal investigators at UC Berkeley are Marcia Linn and Jim Slotta. Carolyn Huie Hofstetter is coordinating assessment work on the project.
