Fieldwork Petition Policies and Procedures

As stated on the requirements page of this website, three (3) units of Minor-approved fieldwork are required of all Education Minor students. Education fieldwork includes the direct provision of educational services (i.e., teaching, tutoring, teacher assisting, mentoring, etc.) within educational settings, or the development of curriculum/programs to be used within educational settings and classrooms. Education Minor fieldwork involves a field placement in an educational setting and an accompanying seminar that meets regularly during the semester. The purpose of this seminar is to introduce students to educational theory, discuss substantive educational issues, and to engage them in analyzing their fieldwork experience. An Education Minor approved fieldwork seminar not only assists in training students for the tasks of the fieldwork, but also examines issues in education relevant to the particular fieldwork site.

Education Minor Fieldwork Student Petition - Policy

Students have the option of petitioning fieldwork that is not Education Minor approved to use it towards the field requirements of the Minor. Petitions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. All petitions must be submitted and approved prior to graduation.

General guidelines agreed by the Undergraduate Minor Committee are as follows:

  • Students who complete at least one (1) unit of Education Minor approved fieldwork, may petition 1 or 2 units of fieldwork that is not Minor approved, assuming the nature of the unapproved unit(s) is clearly related to Education. These petitions are reviewed by the Education Minor Advisor but may also be sent to the Education Minor Committee if the Advisor chooses to do so.

  • Students who have no Education Minor approved field work, but complete at least 6 units of non-Minor approved field work (OR a minimum of 3 units of non-Minor approved field work and the equivalent of at least an additional 3 units), may petition to have their unapproved units count for the Minor fieldwork requirement, assuming the nature of the unapproved units is clearly related to Education. These petitions will be reviewed by the Undergraduate Minor Committee during a regularly scheduled monthly meeting during the Fall and Spring semesters. Student petitions to be reviewed by the Education Minor Committee are due to the Advisor by the last working day of each month when the committee is in session.

Field Studies Petition - Process

Students must electronically submit the completed petition form and all required items and/or attachments to the Minor advisor. After reviewing your petition submission, the Advisor may ask for revisions or additional information. Once the Minor advisor determines the petition is complete, she will either notify you that it is approved, or, if it needs to be reviewed by the Education Minor Committee, she will present it at the next Education Minor Committee meeting on your behalf. You do NOT need to attend this meeting. The Advisor will contact you shortly after the Committee meeting to inform you of the outcome. All petitions must be submitted and approved prior to graduation.

The Education Minor Committee has delegated to the Advisor the authority to review field petitions under specific circumstances. If your petition falls under one of those circumstances, the Advisor will make a determination on the status of your petition and will let you know.

Field Studies Petition - Form

Complete the Student Petition for Field Studies Approval (see form below).

Instructions for the petition forms are stated on each form. However, here are some helpful hints:

  • At the top of the petition form, complete the information about the field program being petitioned. If you are petitioning two different field programs, please use two separate forms.

  • At the top of the petition form, you are also asked to check if you have at least 1 unit of minor approved fieldwork or no minor approved fieldwork. If you have minor approved fieldwork, you will need to provide some basic information, as requested, about that fieldwork.

  • The petition form has a list of criteria to be addressed. Make sure you fully address each item under the criteria.
